Chinatown & Little India, Singapore
Day 2 in Singapore, we go to Chinatown and Little India.
What's on Chinatown?
1. Chinatown
Chinatown is a subzone and ethnic enclave located within the Outram
district in the Central Area of Singapore. Featuring distinctly Chinese
cultural elements, Chinatown has had a historically concentrated ethnic
Chinese population.
As the largest ethnic group in Singapore is Chinese, Chinatown is considerably less of an enclave than it once was. However, the precinct does retain significant historical and cultural significance. Large sections of it have been declared national heritage sites officially designated for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
2. Little India
Little India today is one of Singapore’s most vibrant districts. As you
walk down Serangoon Road and neighbouring streets, explore their mix of
Hindu and Chinese temples, mosques and churches.
3. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple
The largest, prettiest temple in
Singapore, dedicated to the Goddess Kali and dating back to the 19th
century, this structure stands in the heart of Little India, on
Serangoon Road. It’s hard to miss, with its hundreds of tiny statues
depicting frescoes from the legends of the Goddess. The place is
thronged with devotees on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Entry is free
but be sure to dress modestly and take off any footwear outside the
gates.
