The Grand Place, also known as Grote Markt in Dutch, is one of the famous places in Brussels, Belgium. This place is a square which has been the center of city life since the 12th century. Surrounded by beautiful buildings with architecture that reflects Belgium's rich history and culture, The Grand Place has become one of the most famous tourist destinations throughout the world.




The Grand Place dates back to the 11th century when the area was still a bustling market place. However, the square began to develop into a political and economic center in the 13th century. In the 15th century, magnificent buildings were built around this square by wealthy merchants and city leaders. These buildings reflect Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles, with beautiful ornamentation and fine details.



In the 17th century, The Grand Place witnessed important events in Belgian history. In 1695, the square was almost completely destroyed by an attack by the French army which destroyed most of the buildings and created great damage. However, with strong determination, the people of Brussels rebuilt The Grand Place to its original state with stunning beauty.





Until now, The Grand Place continues to be the center of activity in Brussels. Every year, festivals, fairs and cultural events are held here. Tourists can also enjoy the beautiful architecture that surrounds this square, including the magnificent Brussels City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) with its towering bell tower.

Tram: Line 92 or 94 to Palais 
Bus: Line 38 or 71 to Royale, or line 21, 27, 71, or 95 to Ducale
