The oldest mosque in Brunei Darussalam is the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, also known as the Jame' Asr Mosque. Construction of the mosque began in 1988. The name "Asr" is taken from a surah in the Koran that refers to "evening time" or "twilight time," signifying a blessed time for Muslims. This project was initiated and organized by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who is also the head of state of Brunei Darussalam.
The Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque was inaugurated by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on July 14 1994, to coincide with the Sultan's 50th Golden Jubilee celebrations. The mosque, which was completed in 1994, was intended to commemorate the 25th year of the Sultan's reign and become a symbol of the revival of Islam in Brunei Darussalam.
The Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque was designed by combining traditional Malay-Islamic architecture with a modern touch. This mosque has a golden dome as high as 52 meters, making it one of the largest mosque domes in the world. The dome is decorated with colorful mosaics depicting verses from the Koran.
The interior of the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is very spacious and comfortable, it can accommodate up to 5,000 people. The main prayer hall is decorated with luxurious Persian carpets and sparkling crystal chandeliers. The pulpit of the mosque, where the sermon is delivered, is made of beautiful carved teak wood. This mimbar is one of the most impressive works of art in the mosque and is a symbol of the skill of Bruneian craftsmen.
Apart from its magnificent golden dome, the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque also has four towers that rise high in each corner. These towers are 44 meters high and are crowned with small gold-plated domes. Apart from the main prayer room, the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is also equipped with various facilities for the comfort of the congregation. This mosque has a library which holds a collection of more than 50 thousand books about Islam and Malay culture.
The mosque also has conference rooms, classrooms, and a training center for various religious and social activities. This mosque also has a large parking area to accommodate the large number of worshipers who visit.
The Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of Islamic revival in Brunei Darussalam. This mosque is the center of religious and social activities, as well as a gathering place for Muslim communities from all over the country.
