Lawang Sewu is one of the most famous historical buildings in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The name “Lawang Sewu” comes from the Javanese language, where “lawang” means door and “sewu” means thousand, so it literally means “a thousand doors.” The building is known for its large number of doors and windows, which create good air circulation and give the building its unique appearance.
Today, Lawang Sewu is a popular tourist attraction and museum that attracts visitors who are interested in history, architecture, and culture.



The construction of Lawang Sewu began in 1904 during the Dutch colonial period and was completed around 1918–1919. The building originally served as the headquarters of the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS), a Dutch railway company operating in Indonesia at that time. During World War II, when Japan occupied Indonesia, the building was used by Japanese forces as a military office. After Indonesia gained independence, Lawang Sewu became part of the Indonesian railway system and is now owned by PT Kereta Api Indonesia.



The building also witnessed historical events, including the Five-Day Battle in Semarang in October 1945, which involved Indonesian railway youth forces and Japanese soldiers.



Lawang Sewu was designed by Dutch architects J. F. Klinkhamer and B. J. Ouëndag. The building uses the New Indies architectural style, which combines European design with tropical elements suitable for Indonesia’s climate.



The complex covers an area of about 18,232 square meters and consists of several buildings with tall doors, large windows, and beautiful stained glass decorations. These design features allow natural light and air to circulate throughout the building.



Today, Lawang Sewu functions as a museum and historical tourism site. Visitors can explore the building, learn about the history of Indonesian railways, and see exhibitions about the colonial period and the struggle for independence.



Because of its historical value, unique architecture, and mysterious stories associated with the building, Lawang Sewu has become one of the most iconic landmarks in Semarang.



Lawang Sewu is not only a beautiful historical building but also an important symbol of Indonesia’s past. Its rich history, impressive architecture, and cultural significance make it one of the most visited attractions in Central Java.
