JIUFEN OLD STREET

Jiufen Old Street
Jishan St, Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 224

The history of Jiufen Old Street dates back to the 19th century when it was a prosperous gold mining town. It is said that the town got its name from the nine families who settled there, and the village eventually grew into a thriving mining community. However, the city's promise gradually declined after the gold rush subsided, and it became a ghost town for several years.
The street's transformation into a tourist attraction began in the 1980s after the release of the film "City of Sadness", which featured the city's atmospheric alleys and architecture. Today, Jiufen Old Street is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, who come to explore its historical charm and rich culture.

One of the main attractions of Jiufen Old Street is its architecture, which is a unique blend of Chinese and Japanese styles. Visitors can stroll along the narrow alleys and admire the traditional teahouses, red lanterns and other historic buildings that line the streets.
The main thing you can do when traveling to Jiufen is walking along the street. Along Jiufen old street (more accurately called an alley) there are shops selling typical Taiwanese snacks such as boba, taro balls and sweets; gift shop; restaurant; as well as a ceramics shop.

Many of the snacks here can also be found at night markets in downtown Taipei. Likewise the souvenirs which in my opinion are not that special. What is clearly sold a lot are Spirited Away themed souvenirs. Even though the variety of food and drinks here is no different from that in Taipei, Jiufen old street is still worth visiting. Jiufen Old Street is not much different from other old streets-night markets in Taiwan in terms of products sold, accessories, snacks and souvenirs. But what makes it different is the layout. If most old streets and night markets are neatly lined up horizontally, on Jiufen Old Street the shop outlets are neatly lined up diagonally and vertically. Yes, of course, because Jiufen is located in the mountains, the contours of the buildings and roads must follow the terrain.

One of Jiufen's most popular landmarks is the A-Mei Tea House, which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and sea. The tea house is also famous for its association with the Japanese film, "Spirited Away", which is said to have been the inspiration for the bathhouse in the film.

This is the Jiufen landmark. A-Mei Tea House, a tea house that is more than 100 years old, is often used as a backdrop for Instagram photos about Jiufen and also in Taiwan tourist brochures. This multi-story wooden building with a classical Chinese architectural style has become increasingly famous thanks to its similarity to the Bath House, one of the central locations in the anime film Spirited Away.
It's not surprising that the A-Mei Tea House is always full of tourists.

A-Mei Tea House is located in an alley near the main road of Jiufen old street. Because it is at the top of the hill, from the balcony we can enjoy the view of Mount Keelung on the right and the north coast of Taiwan on the left.

You can try tea ceremony here and eat some condiments like mochi and moon cakes.
oh yes, the tea's smell is soooo gooodd!

How to get there:
Getting to Jiufen from Taipei is very easy. From Chiang Kai-shek memorial hall I took the MRT blue line to Zhongxiao Fuxing station, then left via exit 1, then took bus 1062 to Jiufen old street station. Bus 1062 is usually ready to wait outside the MRT station doors.
The journey from Taipei to Jiufen itself takes 1 hour 30 minutes. Stop at Jiufen old street station and just walk 200 meters and you will find the mouth of the alley which is the entrance to Jiufen old street.
