The fermentation process is quite time consuming, namely 3 months to more than 5 years. After going through a fermentation process for 18 months, the cheese produced will usually have a strong taste. Gouda cheese is often served with fruit and wine, and is often served as a dessert.
The shape of a large round gouda cheese resembles a wheel with a pink wrapper made of wax. This cheese is made from cow's milk, its color is yellow or orange with a creamy texture and sweet taste. According to The Spruce Eats, the name of the cheese is taken from its hometown, Gouda, which is known as a cheese producer in the Netherlands. According to the official Gouda City website, every Thursday morning from April to September there is a gouda cheese market. Cheese makers and sellers gather to sell their best gouda. Starting from the 1500s to the 1700s, the Dutch created long-lasting cheeses such as gouda and edam. The reason is, the water content of this cheese is low and the outer layer contains vinegar and saffron. Gouda is easily recognized usually by its dark red wrapper, which looks like cheese rind. This layer is not edible, it must be peeled off and discarded.


Apart from Gouda cheese, edam is also one of the most popular and best-selling types in the Netherlands. The characteristic of Edam cheese lies in its shape which resembles a ball with slightly flat sides.This type of cheese is made from 40 percent skim milk fat so it has a soft and slightly savory taste on the tongue. Edam cheese is often served with a glass of beer to make the taste even stronger.
