The presence of this mosque symbolizes the glory of Islam which is the official religion in the country of Brunei Darussalam. Construction of the Sultan Omar Ali Mosque began in 1954. The construction process lasted four years. Completed, this mosque was inaugurated by Sultan Omar Ali on Friday, September 26 1958. The height of this mosque is 52 meters or 171 feet and can be seen from every corner of the city of Bandar Seri Begawan.

The design of this mosque is very unique because it combines Mughal architecture with Italian nuances. The figure behind the building designer is Booty and Edwards Chartered who collaborated with Cavaliere Rudolfo Nolli, an architect from Italy.
